how I became a writer

I realized when I was seven and wrote a 25-page novel about Vikings on that wide-lined grade-school paper that I wanted to be a writer when I grew up. I started as a newspaper reporter to gain experience writing simply and directly, and from there wrote ad copy to hone my creativity. A few years ago I set out to work on my literary writing full time.
